Manama, (IINA) - Britain has begun building on Saturday its first permanent military base in Bahrain. The Royal Navy facility is the first British military base in the Middle East since 1971, according to media reports.
“The ground-breaking ceremony for the establishment of the marine facilities headquarters in the Kingdom of Bahrain was launched on Saturday", Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Al-Khalifa attended the ceremony.
Hammond tweeted on Saturday that the new Royal Navy base, which is built on Mina Salman Port, “is a symbol of UK’s enduring commitment to Gulf security”.
According to UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, this facility will give the UK an enhanced and permanent presence in the region, allowing longer-term deployments in the Gulf.
Hammond stated: "The beginning of construction work at Mina Salman Port marks a watershed moment in the UK’s commitment to the region". He also added: "the new facility will enable Britain to work with our allies to reinforce stability in the Gulf and beyond".
The new base is part of a deal reached last year between the two countries to increase cooperation in tackling security threats in the Middle East.
