Malang, (IINA) - Indonesian students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Brawijaya University have recently invented a quantitative analytical tool that detects cyanide levels in food. The students call the tool the "Cyanide Test Kit", Antara news agency reported.
A member of the research team Luluil Maknun said: "Cyanide is a toxic compound that can inhibit the circulation of oxygen in the body. This compound can cause death in humans, if consumed in excess of the maximum allowable limit, within 15 minutes".
She said that the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency established on 2006 that no more than 1 mg of cyanide per 1 kg of body weight can be allowed.
The Cyanide Test Kits are sold at $1.5 per kit, and each kit can be used up to 60 times. The sensitivity of the kit is quite high as it is capable of detecting cyanide levels as low as 0.04 ppm, however, the kit needs around five minutes to detect cyanide levels in a sample.
