Ouagadougou, (IINA) - A court in Burkina Faso framed charges on Tuesday against a general and a former foreign minister. The charges include threatening the state's security and murder during last month's coup, Reuters reported.
General Gilbert Diendere led members of the elite presidential guard soldiers in the coup and held the country's president, prime minister and members of the transitional government as hostages less than a month before elections.
Diendere surrendered to the army after a week of power-grab fighting. However, some of his forces resisted an order to disarm, which forced the army to attack their base in the capital Ouagadougou last week. Diendere, a former spy chief, was handed over to authorities on Thursday after initially seeking refuge in the Vatican embassy.
The former Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso Djibril Bassole was also arrested for having connections with the coup. Diendere and Bassole are now being charged with 11 offences, such as colluding with foreign forces to destabilize interior security, voluntary assault, and willful destruction of property, according to two sources familiar with Tuesday's proceedings.
At least 11 people were killed and 271 others injured as the presidential guard crushed protests against their actions. Meanwhile, Burkina Faso is due to hold presidential and general elections on Sunday.
