Lima, Peru (IINA) - The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) granted the government of Tajikistan $70 million to support the regional electricity program "CASA 1000". IDB's President Ahmad Ali and the Tajikistani Minister of Finance Abdusalom Qurbonov signed an agreement to this effect here on Friday, Khovar reported.
The aim of CASA 1000 is to organize the exporting process of surplus electricity of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan and Afghanistan during summer.
The project contributes to the development of electricity trading arrangements and the establishment of a regional electricity market in Central and South Asia and it is an important step towards the development of a cross-border energy transportation system that facilitates the transfer of surplus electricity from one region to another.
It is noteworthy that the project cost exceeds $1 billion, Tajikistan received $235 million from the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank. Other agreements with the US Agency for International Developments and the UK Department for International Development are scheduled within the upcoming period.
