Brussels, Belgium (IINA) - The Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE) voiced concern over the escalating crisis in dealing with refugees in Europe. In a statement, it expressed distress over the tragedies that have led to the increasing numbers of victims through drowning or suffocation in their journeys of pursuing a safe place, FIOE news reported.
FIOE demanded the adherence to humanitarian obligations and human rights stipulations in receiving and processing refugees, in a way that preserves their dignity. The Federation also urged an improvement in the relief response and the material and moral support for refugees to overcome any existing shortcomings in the provision of refuge.
Also, the Federation called for measures to curtail the activities of greedy human traffickers, who exploit the humanitarian needs of those seeking a safer place, and take reckless risks with their lives.
In a related context, FIOE applauded the recent positive positions and statements by European leaders. On the other hand, the Federation sadly noted some positions and statements that imply derogation from the conventions and obligations stipulated at European and international level regarding refugees, which gives the perception of discrimination towards them on religious or ethnic grounds.
