Makkah (IINA) - The committee tasked to investigate into the tragic crane crash at the Grand Mosque in Makkah started its mission on an urgent basis.
Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah and advisor of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has directed setting up of two committees to probe into the Haram tragedy. The committees are examining the causes of crashing the crane and will present the report quickly. Dr. Hisham Al-Falih, general supervisor of the Agency for Development at Makkah governorate, said that the committee probing the cause of the accident met with the governor at the accident scene Friday night, the Saudi Press Agency reported. “The meeting reviewed the preliminary reports presented by different agencies about the tragedy. Specialized Saudi engineers from different departments have been assigned to precisely pinpoint the causes of the accident in cooperation with the concerned agencies,” he said.
Al-Falih said the project contractor has been entrusted to ensure the safety of the remaining cranes stationed at the Haram expansion project site. A massive construction crane crashed in the Grand Mosque in stormy weather on Friday evening, killing at least 107 people and injuring 238. Ahmad Al-Mansouri, spokesman of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, said the tragedy occurred at 5.10 p.m. due to strong winds and heavy rain, causing a part of the crane to smash into the part of the Grand Mosque where worshippers circumambulate the Holy Kaaba (mataf) and where pilgrims walk between Mount Safa and Marwa (mas’a).
