Indonesian president meets OIC chief in Jeddah

Jeddah (IINA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, received Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani and his accompanying delegation at the Palace of Hospitality on Saturday.
During the meeting, Madani commended President Jokowi for the leadership and active role of Indonesia in supporting OIC initiatives and programs. Madani briefed the president on some of the major issues of concern to the OIC including regional issues, the plight of the Rohingya and Islamophobia as well as preparations for three upcoming Islamic summits: the Science and Technology Summit in Islamabad, the Extraordinary Summit on Palestine and Al-Quds in Morocco and the regular 13th Summit that will take place in Turkey. Madani underlined that the OIC could benefit from Indonesia’s experiences in different aspects.
On his part, Widodo expressed support for the OIC and its various activities, and discussed an initiative to form a contact group on communicating the values of Islam as a religion of mercy. As a country with the largest number of Muslim population in the world, president reiterated, Indonesia would also continue to play active role in the Muslim world. OIC’s Assistant Secretary General for Science and Technology Ambassador Naim Khan, Director in Political Affairs Ambassador Ali Abolhassani, Advisor in the Humanitarian Affairs Ambassador Fouad Maznaie, and Professional Officer in Cultural Affairs Dr. Dodik Ariyanto also attended the meeting. Widodo arrived in the Kingdom Friday evening. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman received him at King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah.
