Kuala Lumpur, (IINA) - Some parents in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, are refusing routine vaccinations for their children on the belief that the vaccines are non-halal, despite the halal certification from the Islamic authorities and the health ministry, The Malaysian Insider reported.
Dr Jickson Ng, a primary care physician in a government clinic, said he had so far met three sets of parents who told him that according to their religious teachers, vaccines were not halal.
“They kept saying their ‘guru’ told them the vaccines are not halal,” he said in an interview with The Malaysian Insider.
“They say they have studied or read books, but they won’t say which books or give the names of their gurus or ulama.”
Dr Ng said in all three cases, the parents appeared reasonably well-educated with some holding diplomas from Middle Eastern universities or open universities in Malaysia.
“They tell me that vaccines are bad, that they have met doctors who are against vaccination.
“No matter what I tell them or how I reason with them, they won’t give in."
In any case, he said, all vaccines in the country are certified halal.
“We have official statements from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Health Director-General (Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah) saying that all vaccines in Malaysia, especially the compulsory ones, are halal.
According to Malaysian health ministry, those who oppose vaccinations either have not received the necessary information or are unwilling to accept facts based on scientific evidence.
