 Nouakchott (IINA) - A Mauritanian Mufti demanded the creation of a Commission of the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, or religious police, in order to enforce Sharia (Islamic law) in the country, Al Arabiya News channel reported on Friday.
Ahmed Wald Habib al-Rahman, who is considered to be the Mufti of the Republic, said that a religious police force was needed to end the suffering of Muslims which is caused “by the lack of respect of God’s law.” “The problems experienced by the Islamic nation are due to repulsive hearts which emerged from rivalry and cowardice,” Wald Habib al-Rahman said calling for “communication, harmony and cooperation” in Mauritania.
The preacher made the demand during a meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and other high officials at the Grand Mosque in central Nouakchott. The request, which comes following an alarming rise in acts of violence including rape, kidnapping and harassment, was not the first of its kind. In 2011, a group of Salafist demanded the introduction of guardians of public morality in the country.
