Sanliurfa, Turkey (IINA) - An explosion has killed at least 27 people and wounded many more in the Turkish town of Suruc near the Syrian border, News agencies reported citing the interior ministry.
"The death toll is feared to rise," it said, adding that nearly 100 people were under treatment at Suruc and Sanliurfa state hospitals.
A team of experts has been sent to Suruc, neighboring the Syrian town of Kobani, and security forces have taken measures around the area, the ministry said.
The blast occurred in the garden of a cultural centre. Hundreds of youth workers were reportedly staying there.
There is no official word on the cause of the explosion. Reports say it could have been a suicide attack.
The Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF) is reported to have had at least 300 members staying at the Amara Culture Centre to take part in rebuilding work in Kobane.
Pervin Buldan, a senior lawmaker from Turkey's pro-Kurdish HDP opposition party, told Reuters that local officials were investigating the possibility it was a suicide bombing.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.
The ministry called for calm, describing the blast as a “terror attack that targeted our country’s unity and integrity”.
It also pledged to find the perpetrators and to bring them to account.
Meanwhile, Turkey prime ministry office said three minister’s deputy PM, interior minister and labor minister were set to visit Suruc later in the day to investigate the scene.
