Beirut, (IINA) - Australia has pledged around AUD10 million ($7.9 million) in aid to Lebanon to help soften the blow of the Syrian spillover refugees, the country's ambassador announced on Tuesday.
“Australia has recently announced that it will offer around AUD20 million to treat the humanitarian crisis resulting from the situation in Syria, and Lebanon will have AUD10 million from that,” Ambassador Glenn Miles told reporters after a meeting with Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.
“This amount will be distributed not only to support Syrian refugees but also Lebanese host communities,” he added.
Miles explained that his country had allocated AUD135 million in donations to help face the Syrian refugee crisis over the last five years, Lebanese Daily Star reported.
“I would like to thank Lebanon for baring this responsibility and receiving 1.5 million refugees with the big burden this brings to infrastructure, society and economy,” he said. “We understand that, and this is why we try to be supportive of you.” It is noteworthy that Beirut has appealed to donor states for help with the refugee crisis, which has placed immense pressure on its already inadequate infrastructure.
