Madani congratulated the parties for their patriotism and compromise leading to the much anticipated conclusion of the peace accord that will contribute to the stability of Mali and the region. He noted that this achievement constitutes a significant step in the endeavors of the Malian people to collectively confront the numerous political, security, socio-economic and development challenges that have plagued their nation for decades.
The Secretary General appealed to the sense of responsibility of the movements that are yet to sign the peace and reconciliation agreement, under the Algiers Declaration of 9 June 2014, to hasten to do so before the planned formal signing ceremony later this month in Mali.
Madani commended the Algerian-led international mediation which composed of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the European Union, the OIC and the United Nations, as well as Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria for their dedication and perseverance throughout the eight-month long peace process that produced the key accord. He pledged the OIC commitment to the full implementation of the agreement.
The Secretary General finally called on the international community to be ready to intensify its engagement in peace building in Mali in the period ahead.
