Wednesday 04 Feb 2015 - 13:49 Makkah mean time-15-4-1436 Ottawa (IINA) - Canadian police on Tuesday arrested an Ottawa man whom they said was planning to aid ISIS fighters and charged him with participation in the activity of a terrorist group, news agencies reported.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the man, Awso Peshdary, 25, was also accused of facilitating the activity of a terrorist group. They stressed there had never been any immediate threat to the Canadian public.
International warrants were also issued through Interpol for the arrest of two other men, including a Canadian reportedly killed in Syria, for joining the banned terror group.
Awso, who is in custody in Ottawa, had been previously arrested as part of another investigation, but was released due to a lack of evidence, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Jennifer Strachan told a press conference.
Khadar Khalib, 23, and John Maguire, 24, were charged in absentia with leaving Canada to join ISIS. Khalib is also accused of recruiting for IS.
Both suspect were active on social media denouncing Canada and its allies in their fight against IS. Maguire was said to have been killed in 2013 but police said they have not confirmed the reports.
The Canadian government, acting in the wake of two fatal attacks by suspected ISIS militants in October 2014, last week introduced legislation giving security agencies more powers to disrupt plots.
