Brussels, (IINA) - As part of implementing sanctions approved by the United Nations, the European Union imposed an arms embargo on Monday on Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi and former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and others supporting the country's Houthi rebel movement, according to media reports.
Abdul Malik al-Houthi faces a travel ban, an asset freeze and an arms embargo, in accordance with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2216 passed in April. Sanctions have also been slapped on the son of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Ahmed Ali Abdullah, who was targeted due to his playing “a key role in facilitating the military expansion of the Houthi movement,” the EU said in a statement.
The move comes as warring factions prepare for June 14 talks in Geneva. In December, the EU levied a travel ban and asset freeze on Houthi leaders Abdullah Yahya al-Hakim and Abd al-Khaliq al-Houthi as well as Saleh.
“The EU slammed the “destabilizing unilateral actions taken by the Houthis and forces loyal to ex-President Saleh and urged their forces to immediately stop the use of violence”, Al Arabiya reported,
The EU arms embargo, imposed on all five men, also prevents them from being granted technical and financial assistance related to military activity.
