COMIAC 10th session adopts Dakar Declaration

Dakar (IINA) – The OIC Standing Committee on Information and Culture (COMIAC) concluded its 10th Session, with the theme of “The Role of Youth and Media for Peace and Stability in the Muslim World” in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, on Wednesday.
Wrapping up its proceedings, the two-day session adopted the Dakar Declaration, which emphasized the importance and necessity of disseminating the universal message of Islam that calls for peace and solidarity throughout the world by various appropriate ways and means. The declaration also underscored the need to make every effort to responsibly utilize the potentialities provided by the new information and communication technologies.
Further, the session adopted a set of resolutions, notably, the ones emphasizing the importance of supporting the efforts being made for inter-civilizational and intercultural dialogue, strengthening the efforts of the OIC General Secretariat and its affiliated organs in this domain, and promoting efforts to counter stereotypes against Islam and Muslims.
Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of the media in supporting the cause of Jerusalem and Palestine and called on journalists in the member states to seize the opportunity offered by the spread of social media to highlight the cause of Palestine and the actions of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinians as well as against their properties and holy sites.
In order to revamp COMIAC and strengthen its coordination role, the session called on member states and relevant bodies to provide COMIAC with all necessary material and logistical wherewithal in order to play its leading role in coordinating the OIC media action. In this regard, the session expressed its appreciation over the concept paper prepared by the Department of Information on the establishment of a task force to revamp COMIAC.
The session expressed its support for the resolution to launch an online OIC channel, and pledged to consider implementation mechanisms for the resolution.
