Jeddah (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Madani stated that the organization was following closely and with great concern the latest developments in Yemen.

Madani expressed his backing for the step taken by the states supporting the constitutional legitimacy in Yemen, which responded to the request of the Yemeni leadership to save the country and the entire region from the repercussions of the chaos and violence unleashed by the Houthi group. He stressed the need to address the situation in a way that will preserve legitimacy and constitutional institutions in the country.

The Secretary General indicated that the OIC had previously cautioned against the consequences of the Houthis persistent in their exploits and excesses through plunging the country into civil war. He added that the organization had also warned against the consequences of imposing a fait accompli policy on factions in the Yemeni crisis by the Houthis, who sought help from external forces to undermine the constitutional and legitimate institutions.

Madani said the Houthis have also scuttled the outcome of the National Dialogue Conference and the Peace and National Partnership Agreement, and truncated the Gulf initiative for peaceful transfer of power, which was sponsored by the United Nations and supported by the OIC and all international and regional organizations, and had the participation of all Yemeni factions in order to preserve the unity of the Yemeni territory and people.

The Secretary General reiterated the OIC’s rejection of any interference in Yemeni affairs that could undermine the internationally recognized legitimacy as stipulated in the OIC Charter.

The Secretary General renewed the OIC’s constant position in support of the unity, stability and territorial integrity of Yemen. He also hoped that normalcy would return to Yemen as soon as possible such that the legitimate leadership there could discharge its constitutional functions, which would meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people to stability, prosperity and restoration of Yemen’s leading role in the Islamic Ummah.
