Jakarta (IINA) – Indonesia is expected to produce four million tons of salt this year with 1.5 million for industry use and 2.5 million for the consumer market, nearing self-sufficiency in this product.

Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said that his country has prepared a strategic plan to boost salt production and help the country achieve self-sufficiency by 2017.

Speaking to Malaysia News Agency, the Minister said, “The government will enact measures to support local salt farmers and tighten controls over salt imports”. He added that salt importers in the country have also been encouraged to buy and distribute salt produced by local producers.
