Wednesday 28 Jan 2015 - 13:00 Makkah mean time-8-4-1436  Arakan (IINA) – Former President of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Rooney Proman said that the status of Muslim minority in Myanmar (formerly Burma) is similar to genocide.
Speaking to Anatolia news agency about the experience and infrastructure that MSF has for delivering necessary life-saving medical services in Myanmar, Proman said: “The Rohingya Muslim minority are subjected to quasi-genocide,” noting that, in February last year, when MSF attempted to give its testimony on this issue, the authorities responded immediately by suspending all the group’s operations in Arakan State”. He also pointed out that the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) do not fully enjoy the right of giving testimonies.
He wondered by saying "Whether we have to sacrifice the lives of tens of thousands of people, or continue to give our testimonies concerning the freedom of speech," adding that the group is renowned for its victory for the freedom of expression.
Proman said that MSF implemented vital medical aid programs in Myanmar, where it offered health care to the victims of HIV/AIDS in Arakan State.
It is noteworthy that Rooney Proman, who had assumed the presidency of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for more than 10 years, has been well-known for his humanitarian work in conflict zones around the world since the 1980s of the last century.
