Sydney (IINA) - The start of an inquest into the Sydney cafe siege has heard that hostage Katrina Dawson was killed by fragments from a police bullet or bullets, news agencies reported.

Dawson, who is a 38-year-old barrister and mother-of-three, was killed along with cafe manager Tori Johnson, 34, when police stormed the cafe in Sydney's financial district in the early hours of Dec.16 and killed the gunman Haron Monis.

“Dawson was struck by six fragments of a police bullet or bullets which ricocheted from hard surfaces into her body,” counsel assisting the coroner's inquest, Jeremy Gormly, said.

The inquest is seeking to establish exactly how the three died and whether their deaths could have been avoided.

The hearing will also examine whether it was appropriate to treat the siege as a terrorist event and whether the crisis could have been managed better.

Gunman Monis took 18 people hostage at the cafe in Martin Place in Sydney's business district on 15 December, leading to a massive police operation and the shutdown of a large part of the city centre.
