Ankara (IINA) – Turkish Parliament Speaker Ismail Kahraman said Monday that the country's new constitution should be "religious" and that the principle of "Secularism" should not be included in it.
"As a Muslim country, why should we be in a situation where we are in retreat from religion?" Kahraman was quoted by Anadolu Agency as saying at a press conference in Istanbul.
"Secularism cannot feature in the new constitution," he added.
The opposition slammed the speaker's comments and accused the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of undermining the secular values laid by modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk since it took power in 2002.
