OIC Summit welcomes Morocco's hosting of Climate Change Conference

Jeddah (IINA) – The 13th session of the Islamic Summit Conference (Session of Unity and Solidarity for Justice and Peace), set to begin in Istanbul on Thursday, will review the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change on the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
According to the draft resolution, the Istanbul Summit welcomes Morocco’s hosting of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, from 7 November to 18 in Marrakesh. It also stresses the importance of this conference, regarding the follow-up and activation of Paris climate change deal, the global environmental challenges, and the persistence in tackling the global environmental challenges.
Recognizing the challenges and vulnerabilities faced by the least-developed and small developing OIC member countries due to the climate change, the Islamic Summit underscores the need for a firm global cooperation, effective finance, development and transfer of technology, provision of support for capabilities to the developing countries by the developed ones, within the relevant international conventions, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The document of the draft resolution pointed out that the Islamic Summit Conference welcomes Paris climate change deal, which includes in its most important provisions a pledge to stop global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The agreement also sets out a ratchet mechanism whereby countries review and strengthen their climate pledges every five year, beginning in 2020.
