Istanbul, (IINA) - The 13th session of the Islamic Summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) began here on Thursday, with the theme of "Session of Unity and Solidarity for Justice and Peace".
In the opening speech by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, he stated that the state of turmoil in Syria, Yemen, and Libya is caused by regional and international issues. He warned: “Conflicts are spreading at an alarming rate, and they pose a significant threat to humanity”.
The minister said that the OIC plays a major role in solving these issues. Shoukry also called on OIC member states to make greater efforts towards resolving the Palestinian issue, urging the international community to assume responsibility as well in upholding the two-state solution.
Stressing Egypt's keenness on resolving Libya’s crisis, he welcomed the appointment of the new unity government in Tripoli.
Regarding the Syrian crisis, Shoukry affirmed Egypt's keenness to find a solution that exterminates terrorism and preserve the unity of the Syrian territory. He also called for the preservation of Muslim minorities' rights around the world.
The summit is expected to adopt several resolutions seeking to promote joint Islamic actions, as well as improve the role of the OIC on the regional and international levels.
