Khartoum (IINA) – Prominent Sudanese Islamic thinker and opposition leader Dr Hassan al-Turabi has died in Khartoum, at the age of 84, medical sources said on Saturday.
Turabi, who was the head of the Popular Congress Party (PCP), passed away at the Royal Care International Hospital in the Sudanese capital following a heart attack, a hospital source told AFP.
Turabi was born in Kassala, eastern Sudan in 1932. He graduated from the University of Khartoum in 1955 with a BA in law, pursued a master's degree in law in Oxford University in 1957, and later earned his PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1962. He spoke English, French and German fluently as well as Arabic.
Turabi served as dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Khartoum, and was appointed attorney general in 1979 during Ja’afar al-Nimeiri regime. He played a key role in the 1989 coup that brought President Omar al-Bashir to power.
He has been called “one of the most influential figures in modern Sudanese politics.” In March 1996, Turabi was elected to the National Assembly, where he served as speaker during the 1990s. After a political fallout with President Omar al-Bashir in 1999, Turabi was imprisoned for a number of times.
