New York, (IINA) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) in a statement issued recently has called for an outside investigation of the alleged bullying that resulted in two Muslim brothers at Williamsville East High School in Williamsville, N.Y., facing an expulsion hearing.
Family members say the Muslim are being punished after they were forced to defend themselves from anti-Muslim bullies. The students report that the bullying has been occurring for years. This weekend, the family’s house was pelted with eggs and rocks, resulting in broken doors and windows.
An expulsion hearing with Williamsville’s superintendent was scheduled for Monday, but has been rescheduled for Friday. Williamsville Superintendent Dr. Scott Martzloff said the district “takes harassment, bullying, insensitive or intolerant behavior very seriously.”
“We urge district officials to commission an outside investigation of the years of bullying that allegedly resulted in the attempt to expel these Muslim students,” said CAIR-NY Director of Operations Sadyia Khalique. “We call on local law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for the attack on the Muslim family’s home.”
“A report by CAIR’s California chapter, titled “Mislabeled: The Impact of Bullying and Discrimination on California Muslim Students,” indicated that that more than half of Muslim students in that state have been subject to at least one form of religion-based bullying.
CAIR-NY recently called on two Muslim girls who were reportedly attacked in Buffalo, N.Y., to come forward and report the incident to police.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
