Kuala Lumpur (IINA) – Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Dr Ahmed Mohammed el-Tayeb stated that ties between al-Azhar University and the people of Malaysia continued to grow. This is because tens of thousands of Malaysians have continued their studies at al-Azhar University since several decades ago.
Sheikh Ahmed’s words were relayed by Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia Salah al-Wasimi who met him in Egypt recently, according to a press statement issued to BERNAMA here on Wednesday.
The ambassador said the Imam of al-Azhar was proud of the Malaysian students there, as they always paid attention during lectures and showed respect for their lecturers and fellow students. Malaysian students were also said to have good character. Salah said during their meeting, Ahmed also stated his intention to visit Malaysia in the near future.
Salah that said the Imam commended Malaysia’s support for Egypt at international fora. Recently, Malaysia backed Egypt’s nomination to be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Meanwhile, al-Azhar University is trying to increase the number of Malaysian students in the Sharia or academic field towards making them the university’s “ambassadors” to spread the message of Islam.
Also present during the meeting in Egypt was al-Azhar’s representative Dr Abbas Shouman who visited Malaysia last December. According to Salah, Abbas said that Malaysia highly appreciated the University and the role of its scholars (ulemas), and wished to strengthen cooperation with Egypt and al-Azhar.
