Sana’a (IINA) – Some 17 Yemenite Jews arrived in Israel after they were transferred to a 3rd country in a secret operation, according to an Israeli report.
Israeli TV Channel 2 News said on Monday that "17 Yemenite Jews landed last night (Sunday) at Ben-Gurion International Airport, after being airlifted in a secret operation."
"The operation was conducted by the Jewish Agency and made possible by the US State Department, after the group was transferred to a 3rd country from which they arrived in Israel,” the channel added.
The TV channel reported that among the 17 new immigrants was Rabbi Saliman Dahari who arrived with his parents and his wife, pointing out that Dahari brought with him an 800-year-old Torah scroll.
The channel stated that several Jewish families in Yemen are not interested in leaving their homeland, adding that the "secret operation on Sunday was not the first.
In 2013, 20 immigrants were airlifted, and in 2009, 10 immigrants were transferred to Israel through a 3rd country, according to the channel.
The Jewish Agency, a quasi-governmental organization that assists Jewish immigration, reported that only about 40 to 50 of Yemenite Jews now remain in Yemen, where they chose to stay. Yemenite Jews are considered one of the world's oldest Jewish communities.
Harassment by Houthi militias, has pushed the majority of Jews in recent years to leave the mountainous areas in northern Yemen, where they had been living for hundreds of years with the Muslims.
