Benghazi (IINA) – An aircraft operated by forces loyal to Libya's internationally-recognized government carried out airstrikes on Daesh areas of the eastern city of Derna, but the aircraft later crashed because of mechanical failure, a military official said on Monday.
Spokesman for the forces Nasser al-Hassi said in a statement, carried by Sky News Arabia, that the pilot of the MiG-23 Younes al-Dilani, "survived the crash". Before crashing, the aircraft conducted three air raids on Daesh positions that located some 15 kilometers east of Derna, he added.
For his part, Commander of Abraq Air Base Brigadier pilot Ali Al Salihin told Libyan news website Bawabat Al-Wasat that the fighter jet crashed due to "technical glitch". He added that the pilot managed to fly the aircraft as far away as possible from residential neighborhoods, before crashing near Sidi Khaled area, 35 km to the west of Derna, while the pilot survived the incident.
