Ramallah (IINA) – The Israeli Supreme Court on Tuesday delayed a hearing on whether to release Palestinian hunger-striker detainee Mohammad al-Qiq, said a Palestinian official.
Chairman of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission Minister Issa Qaraqe was quoted by Palestine News Agency (WAFA) as saying that the court delayed a sitting originally scheduled to take place Tuesday to review the case of al-Qiq.
The court decision comes as the health condition of al-Qiq is further deteriorating after he has entered his 84th day of an open hunger strike against his administrative detention, without a charge or trial.
Hanan al-Khatib, a lawyer with the Palestinian Authority Committee for Prisoners' Affairs, who has been visiting al-Qiq in Afula HaEmek Hospital, said that "he has entered an incomprehensible stage”.
She warned that “we might lose him” during the next hours and urged for reaching a solution to save his life.
Al-Khatib called upon all concerned stakeholders to do their utmost to save al-Qiq’s life, saying his health condition will be “out of control” in case Israel continues to disregard his issue. She also urged the Supreme Court of Israel to take an “audacious” decision to end al-Qiq’s administrative detention and immediately transfer him to a Ramallah hospital.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinians rallied in Tulkarm, Hebron and Bethlehem in protest against the ongoing detention of al-Qiq.
Last month, UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance and Development Aid Robert Piper expressed grave concern over Israel’s continued practice of administrative detention, without a charge or trial. He reiterated the the UN’s long-standing position that all administrative detainees – Palestinians or Israelis – should be charged or released without delay”.
