Jakarta (IINA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has estimated that about 50 percent illegal drugs in Indonesia are circulated through correctional institutes, ANTARA News reported.
"I think about 50 percent of narcotics circulation take place there," President Jokowi said while opening a limited meeting on elimination of narcotics and a rehabilitation program for drug victims at the Presidential Office here on Wednesday.
Therefore, Jokowi, who is a former governor of Jakarta, asked officials in charge to tighten control on penitentiaries across the country.
"Particularly, prisons which host narcotics convicts, supervision should really be carried out tightly. Probably under a military backup it should be checked through impromptu inspections once or twice a month by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN)," he said.
"Rehabilitation of the addicts and narcotics victims should run effectively," Jokowi noted, adding that the matter is very important to really eliminate the circulation of illegal drugs.
In the meantime, BNN said it would use the money laundering law to charge drug trafficking suspects. It considered all drug traffickers as members of international syndicates, who still could control the illegal drug trade even from their prison cells as they have a lot of money.
