Sofia (IINA) – UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova has confirmed her plans to run for United Nations secretary general.
"I am completely focused on the theme of the forthcoming elections of UN secretary general. I feel national responsibility and I think I have a good chance for that. I have proved I can win elections," she said in an interview with Bulgaria’s Nova TV on Sunday, carried by Russian News Agency TASS.
Bokova, 62, is the first female and Eastern European to head the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since she was elected in October 2009, as the 10th Director-General of the Organization.
The Bulgarian government has nominated her to be the official candidate of the country to succeed Ban Ki-moon as the next UN Secretary General, and she is widely believed to be the frontrunner for that position, according to media reports.
On 11 September 2015, the United Nations adopted a resolution that provides for the possibility of electing a woman to hold the post of the UN secretary general after a succession of eight men in the UN top job.
