Ouagadougou (IINA) – Roch Marc Christian Kabore was proclaimed the winner of Burkina Faso's presidential election, to become the country's first new leader in decades, the Independent National Electoral Commission said early Tuesday morning.
Official results showed that Kabore, from the Movement of People for Progress (MPP) party, won 53.5 percent of the vote, just enough to secure a first round victory.
He will replace the transitional government put in place after the West African nation's longtime president was toppled in a popular uprising in October 2014.
The election of the former premier represents a pivotal moment for the West African nation, which has been ruled by leaders who came to power in coups for most of its history since independence from France in 1960.
