Makassar, Indonesia (IINA) - At least three confirmed dead and nearly 80 still missing when an Indonesian passenger ferry sank after it was struck by high waves on Saturday. Rescuers have pulled out 39 survivors and resumed efforts on Monday to rescue scores of others still missing, AP reported.
The boat was carrying 110 passengers and 12 crew members. The fiberglass ferry was on its way from Kolaka in Southeast Sulawesi province crossing the Gulf of Bone to Siwa town in South Sulawesi province, when it was overwhelmed by waves more than 3 meters high during stormy weather, said Roki Asikin, head of the search and rescue agency in Makassar.
According to AFP, the whereabouts of the remaining people is still unclear. Police, national search and rescue teams and the Navy have been scouring the seas for survivors ever but have been battling rough conditions and waves up to five meters high. It is noteworthy that the Indonesian archipelago has more than 17,000 islands and it is heavily dependent on ferry services.
