Jerusalem, (IINA) - Israel’s Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said on Sunday that he is quitting his posts and leaving politics after reports of sexual harassment and indecent assault, news agencies reported.
“Under these circumstances I have decided to resign from my position as minister and member of parliament”, AFP quoted from his statement.
According to New York Times, Shalom is married to a wealthy socialite from an influential Israeli family. He is also one of Israel’s best-known politicians and had previously served as foreign minister and finance minister.
The deputy prime minister is not the first high-level Israeli politician who abused his post to commit sexual misconduct.
According to BBC, the police anti-fraud department chief is currently under investigation for sexual misconduct.
Last month, Yinon Magal, another member of parliament in the governing coalition, resigned amid sexual harassment accusations. In addition, former Israeli President Moshe Katsav started serving a seven-year jail sentence in 2011 after being convicted of twice raping an aide as well as sexually assaulting two other women who worked for him while he was president.
Al-Arabiya reported that in January 2015, attorney general Yehuda Weinstein urged the public not to lose faith in Israel’s police force despite sex and sexual harassment scandals reaching as high as the deputy national commissioner, the chief of police in the occupied West Bank and the Jerusalem police chief.
