Estonian company creates light-based Li-Fi, 100 times faster than broadband Wi-Fi

Tartu, Estonia (IINA) - An Estonian technology company has recently managed to create a technology that can deliver broadband speeds 100 times faster than the widely used Wi-Fi connection, Tech Times reported.
The technology, called Li-Fi, uses visible light connection (VLC), and it managed to transfer as much as 224 Gbps inside labs and 1 Gbps outside.
"Currently, we have designed a smart-lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the Internet in their office space", Deepak Solanki, CEO of Velmenni, told the International Business Times UK, noting that a consumer-ready model will roll out in about three to four years.
However, according to Tech Times, there are some challenges that face the project.
First, most buildings in the US and Europe were designed to accommodate Wi-Fi networks, renovating the building or in some cases rebuilding it might be necessary to introduce the Li-Fi to them.
Second, the technology uses light instead of radio waves, which means it would not be able to pass through walls, and that would put a major limitation on the covered range.
Third, Li-Fi would not work well outdoors as sunlight could disrupt its signal. Tech Times speculate that Li-Fi would not ultimately take over and remove Wi-Fi from the scene. Instead, the pair will probably be used together, where Li-Fi will be used for tasks that require a high-speed connection and Wi-Fi will be used for general purposes. Li-Fi is also safer for use in hospitals and on airplanes.
