UN Special Rapporteur briefed on impacts of economic sanctions on Sudan

Khartoum (IINA) – Sudanese Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Badr-Eddin Mahmoud Abbas has briefed Idriss Jazairy, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of the Unilateral Coercive Measures, about the negative impacts of the U.S. comprehensive sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997, SUNA reported.
The minister enumerated the effects of the sanctions on the people of Sudan, commercial and economic activity, financial markets and the banking sector. He pointed out that the sanctions are inconsistent with the international conventions.
During a meeting held in Khartoum, the Sudanese minister told the UN Special Rapporteur that the unilateral sanctions have not only affected people's life, the level of economic development and services, but also triggered tribal conflicts in the country. He added that trade restrictions are targeting everything related to human life.
Abbas revealed that the sanctions deprived Sudan from benefiting of the exemption of foreign debt, communication with the international community and integration into the global economy.
He said the sanctions have caused Sudan to delay in the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), pertaining to the economic development and tapping of natural resources.
The minister also noted the damage caused by the sanctions on the transport sectors, including the aviation and railway sectors.
He urged the UN official to meet with the civil society organizations to hear from all stakeholders the effects of the economic sanctions, in order to include them in his report.
For his part, the rapporteur explained that his visit aims at preparing an objective report on the impacts of the unilateral sanctions imposed on the Sudanese people, to highlight the real situation and seek solutions through studying the conditions of Sudan.
Jazairy said the Human Rights Council believes in establishing the truth in violations caused by the sanctions on the people of Sudan. He also called for opening a broad dialogue in order to achieve peace in Sudan.
