London (IINA) – The British government has announced fresh funding for security services to help combat Islamic State-linked terrorism, saying it will allow MI5, MI6 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) to recruit an extra 1,900 officers to the current 12,700 staff, according to a statement on Monday from the Prime Minister's Office.
The funding for a 15 percent increase in staffing was revealed ahead of the publication of the government's Strategic Defense and Security Review, which is expected next week.
A doubling in funding for aviation security is also expected to be agreed this week, to pay for more experts to assess airport safety in countries with large numbers of British visitors, among other measures. The UK currently spends about £9 million a year on this issue.
According to the BBC, the move follows Friday's terror attacks in Paris, in which 129 people were killed, including a Briton. The so-called Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attacks on Saturday.
“Our intelligence agencies work round the clock behind the scenes and as the threat has grown so they too have risen to the challenge,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said, as quoted in the statement.
“This is a generational struggle that demands we provide more manpower to combat those who would destroy us and our values,” he added.
Briton Nick Alexander from Essex has been confirmed dead and Home Secretary Theresa May said some Britons had been injured.
