Kuala Lampur (IINA) - The Islamic University of Malaysia (UIM), the first and only postgraduate university in the Southeast Asian country, recently honored Saudi Arabia for its role in its foundation 60 years ago, Arab News daily reported.
Since UIM's inception in 1955, non-stop efforts by Saudi Arabia and other countries were underway to raise funds for the development of the main campus, which lays on 100-acre land in Cyberjaya, known as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.
“A grand function, which was attended by higher education minister Dato Seri Idris Jusoh, was organized in Kuala Lumpur to honor the Kingdom as well as a number of other countries which contributed to its foundation 60 years ago," an official at the Saudi embassy in Malaysia said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the World Islamic Economic Forum, UIM Rector Mohammad Noor appreciated the Kingdom’s contribution for its material and financial support in establishing and developing the initial building blocks of the University.
It is noteworthy that a scientific, cultural and religious center was built in 1968 as a result of a donation from Saudi Arabia, and the building was named Al-Malik Faisal Hall in commemoration of the then Saudi King Faisal Al-Saud.
Saudi Cultural Attaché in Malaysia Zayed Al-Harthy, who received the plaque on behalf of Saudi Arabia, said: “We are sparing no effort in supporting academic excellence and (contributing) to preaching Islam with wisdom to help people adopt the right approach toward a successful life in this world as well as hereafter”.
