Nebraska (IINA) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has recently called on the FBI to investigate a second act of vandalism targeting a Nebraska mosque as a hate crime, CAIR official website reported.
A vandal was caught on surveillance camera attempting to break a glass door at the Islamic Center in Omaha, the second time the mosque has been attacked this year.
In August, CAIR called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the first act of vandalism as a possible hate crime.
“The FBI should become involved whenever it is suspected that an American house of worship is targeted by hate,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
On Monday, CAIR called for a hate crime investigation of apparently bias-motivated vandalism targeting a mosque in Burlington, Massashusetts.
CAIR has recently responded to vandalism and hate targeting mosques in Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, and other states. Those incidents fit a pattern of increased hate-motivated crimes and bias incidents nationwide targeting persons and property associated, or perceived to be associated, with Islam and the American Muslim community.
CAIR urged community leaders to obtain and implement safety measures outlined in its booklet, "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety". It also asked Muslim community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department.
