Tunis (IINA) – The state of emergency, in force since last July 4 in Tunisia, was lifted nationwide, Presidency of the Republic said in a statement on Friday.
Prime Minister Habib Essid said on Saturday that there is no need to extend the state of emergency, Tunisia Press Agency (TAP) reported.
“The decision to declaring the state of emergency has reached its objectives and the security situation in the country has improved significantly,” he said during a meeting with the press. “The decision to lift the state of emergency is based on a security report,” he specified.
It is to be noted that Tunisia's President Beji Caid Essebsi declared the state of emergency on July 4 for a month after the June gun attack on a beach in front of hotels in the Tunisian resort of Sousse that killed 38, mostly foreign tourists – the second deadly attack on foreigners in three months. He then extended the measure at the end of July for two more months, until the end of September.
