New York (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Madani participated in the Palestinian flag-hoisting ceremony held at the UN headquarters on September 30, in the presence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the UN Secretary General, President of the General Assembly and senior international figures.
Madani stated that although the occasion is symbolic, it constitutes an important step on the road toward cementing the legal status of the State of Palestine among member states of the international community.
Madani expressed his profound happiness and conveyed congratulations to the Palestinian people and leadership on this achievement, and hoped that they will very soon be able to raise their flags on the minaret of Al-Aqsa Mosque and walls of Jerusalem under their independent state.
The secretary general also extolled the efforts made by the OIC group in New York in mobilizing wide international support that led to the adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly on September 10, to raise the Palestinian flag at the United Nations, like the flags of other member states.
