Washington (IINA) – A Moroccan detainee has been released from Guantanamo Bay prison as part of the U.S. effort to close the detention center at the U.S. military base in Cuba, the Pentagon said Thursday in a statement.
Prisoner Younis Abdurrahman Chekkouri was sent to his home country of Morocco after being held for nearly 14 years at Guantanamo, following a security review and notification of Congress as required under the law, according to news agencies.
"In accordance with statutory requirements, the secretary of defense informed Congress of the United States' intent to transfer this individual and of the secretary's determination that this transfer meets the statutory standard," the statement read.
Chekkouri, 46, was captured in December 2001 in Pakistan with a group of suspected al-Qaeda fighters after fleeing Afghanistan and was turned over to the United States. He has been held at Guantanamo since May 2002 and has never been charged.
Chekkouri's release reduces Guantanamo’s prison population to 115, down by more than half since President Barack Obama took office and pledged to close the center.
