New York (IINA) – The UN Security Council on Thursday called for calm and maintaining the status quo of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem after three days of clashes that erupted following the raid of the Mosque by the Israeli occupation forces.
In a unanimous statement, the 15-member council expressed "deep concern over the escalating tension in Jerusalem". They called for "the exercise of restraint, refraining from provocative actions and rhetoric, and upholding unchanged the historic status quo" at the compound "in word and in practice".
They also called for respect of human rights and international law, and urged all parties to work cooperatively together to lower tensions and discourage violence at the holy sites in Jerusalem.
