Arafat (IINA) - Marking the climax of the annual pilgrimage of Haj, nearly two million pilgrims from around the globe gathered on the plains of Arafat on Wednesday, Dhul Hijja 9.
Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti and chairman of the Senior Scholars Commission and Ifta Council Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Asheikh delivered the Arafat sermon and led the noon (Duhr) and evening (Asr) prayers at the grand Namira Mosque. This resembles the famous farewell sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when he performed his only Haj in his final year of life. After the sermon and prayers, the Prophet (PBUH) stationed nearby the side of a hill called Jabal Al-Rahma (Mount of Mercy). Following the example of the Prophet (PBUH) who said "Haj is Arafat", pilgrims converged at the plains of Arafat and performed Duhr and Asr prayers, shortened and joined together, at the time of Duhr with one Adhan and two Iqamas.
Chanting “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik” (O God, here I am answering your call), pilgrims in seamless white clothes - resembling a white sea of humanity - had started heading for Arafat early this morning. The media team of International Islamic News Agency (IINA) witnessed the smooth movement of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat through several roads and pedestrian paths. After spending a whole day and night in Mina in prayers and meditation on the first day of Haj (Yaum Al Tarwiya) Tuesday, they proceeded to Arafat by walking and on train, buses and other vehicles. Saudi authorities have mobilized all its resources and facilities to make the movement of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat a great success.
As per the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, all the concerned ministries, government departments and security agencies are readied to make available of the best possible services for the pilgrims. The Kingdom has mobilized around 300,00 personnel, including 100,000 members of the security forces, in addition to troops supporting the Defense Ministry, and the National Guard.
The standing (wuqoof) at Arafat, one of the four pillars of Haj, begins after noon prayers. Pilgrims will engage in prayers and supplication until after sunset. They will seek forgiveness and pleasures of Allah. The Prophet said about the Arafat day: “There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Hell than the Day of Arafat. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, 'What do these people want?' It is a great Sunnah for those who do not perform Haj to observe fasting on Arafat day. After completing the ritual of standing at Arafat, the pilgrims then move to Muzdalifah in a calm and dignified manner, reciting Talbiyah a great deal. They will offer the Maghrib prayer with three Raka’a and Isha prayer in two Raka’a at the time of Isha after reaching Muzdalifah, and spend the night there in supplication.
