Tunis (IINA) – Tunisian Interior Minister Najem Gharsalli said Tuesday that holding any peaceful demonstration or protest “is contrary to the provisions imposed by the state of emergency”, Tunisia Press Agency (TAP) reported.
Among the security measures recently adopted is the closure of Habib Bourguiba Avenue in the center of the capital Tunis, until September 14.
This decision “has no relation with the national march scheduled for September 12 to protest against the economic reconciliation bill,” Gharsalli affirmed on the sidelines of the meeting of the National Committee for Disaster Reduction.
The closing of Habib Bourguiba Avenue aims to “guard against terrorist threat in this critical period,” he said, referring to the commemoration of “painful and bloody events” in September, such as the attacks on the “World Trade Centre” in the United States on September 11, 2001 and the attack on the US Embassy in Tunis on September 14, 2012.
The minister stressed that the Ministry of Interior has to adopt necessary security measures to avert any other terrorist attack. He said that terrorist organizations had posted on social networks threats targeting rallies, sit-ins or protests.
“Government officials, political parties, members of the civil society and citizens should require the Ministry of Interior to enforce the law on the state of emergency,” he noted, adding that Tunisia is still “under terrorist threat despite the improved security situation.”
