Doha (IINA) – Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) announced Sunday the completion of digging nine wells in Chad to provide potable water for the financially challenged community, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The project, which costs about $ 27,254, was achieved in partnership with Chad's Albir Charitable Association, as per an agreement signed in 2012.
The nine fenced surface water wells, annexed with cattle troughs, are in towns and districts located between six to 85 km from the town of Moussoro, which is 294 km from the Chadian capital N'Djamena.
The Society said all the digging and construction works have been completed, and tens of thousands of people have begun using clean drinking water, which will help alleviate the impact of potable water scarcity. It added that the work was coordinated with licensed water well drilling contractors to ensure quality and sustainability.
The drilled water wells are deep enough and lined with high-quality bricks, thus ensuring longer use for more locals and livestock.
At the opening ceremony, attended by officials and local community, Mayor of Moussoro Issa Abdel-Rahman thanked Qatar Red Crescent Society on behalf of the government of Chad.
On his part, Albir Charitable Association Chairman Youssef Mohamed Abbas said that the people of Chad face water crisis even in major cities like N'Djamena and Abeche and that many towns and areas have no water wells. He added that some towns are located 10 km or more away from the nearest water well.
