New York, (IINA) - The Palestinian flag is to fly at the UN headquarters in New York after the general assembly overwhelmingly approved the Palestinian draft, infuriating Israel with a move that Palestinians described as a step towards UN membership, media agencies reported.
There were 119 votes out of 193 UN members in favor of raising the flag, 45 states did not vote, and only 8 states were against raising the flag, out of which were the United States and Israel.
The resolution says observer states’ flags will be raised within 20 days, Palestinian diplomats say they expect their flag to be raised by September 30, the day the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, addresses the world leaders at the annual gathering of the assembly.
The Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said, “It’s a step to the recognition of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations.”
Riyadh Mansour, the Palestinian Representative to the UN, before the vote, said that "It is a symbolic thing, but another step to solidify the pillars of the state of Palestine in the international arena”.
After the vote, Mansour hailed the historic vote and called it "another step towards fulfilling the promise of independence made to the Palestinian people nearly seven decades ago".
