Oslo, (IINA) - In a huge step that could make history in the Norwegian capital, a Muslim environmentalist is strongly suggested as the upcoming Oslo mayor, after his Green Party became kingmaker in Norway local elections, OnIslam reported.
The nomination of Shoaib Sultan followed the victory Green Party achieved after winning five seats in Oslo city council in Monday's election.
"He (Shoaib Sultan) would be a wonderful mayor for all of Oslo, he would be the most representative mayor the people of Oslo have ever known," Rasmus Hansson, leader of MDG Green Party leader, told NRK radio on Tuesday.
Becoming the kingmakers, both the right wing, which has been in power in Oslo for 18 years, and the left have said they are ready to negotiate with MDG to obtain a majority on the council.
The right won 28 of the 59 seats up for grabs, while the left took 26 seats.
Racing in elections, MDG represents itself as officially independent from the two blocs, but has traditionally voted with leftist parties.
"The issues will be what is most important for us," said Hansson.
Yet, Hansson said his party could be swayed to give up the mayor's post if it wins concessions on policy issues in exchange.
Sultan, who is 41 year-old, is a former secretary of the Islamic Council, an umbrella organization representing Muslims in Norway.
Being a practicing Muslim, Sultan does not see his religion as a barrier to Oslo's top position.
“I think it is an exciting challenge. Oslo is an exciting city with great challenges and also great opportunities,” he said, reported Aftenposten.
