Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries

Vienna (IINA) – The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Tuesday welcomed a request made by Indonesia to rejoin the oil producing cartel.
Indonesia had been among OPEC members for almost 50 years until suspending its membership in 2009, after becoming a net oil importer. Its return is seen as a way for Indonesia to access cheaper oil supplies as demand grows amid declining domestic production.
"Indonesia has submitted an official request to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to reactivate its full membership in the Organization," Vienna-based OPEC said in a statement on Tuesday.
OPEC said Indonesian Energy Minister Sudirman Said will be invited to attend the next regular meeting of the organization on December 4 in Vienna, to inaugurate his country's membership reactivation.
OPEC welcomed Indonesia's return, saying that "Indonesia has contributed much to OPEC's history," according to the statement.
