Juba, South Sudan (IINA) - South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir on Wednesday, has signed a peace pact aimed at ending a 20-month long conflict with rebels, according to media agencies.
The presidents of Kenya and Uganda and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, who all helped mediate the negotiations, were present at the signing event.
Rebel leader Riek Machar, Kiir’s longtime rival, who is expected to take the country’s “first Vice President” position under the pact, signed the document last week in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
The Secretary General of the UN stated, “Now is the time to ensure that this agreement translates into an end to the violence, hardship and horrific human rights violations witnessed throughout this conflict”.
