Around 136,513 Moroccan candidates to stand for municipal and regional elections

Rabat, (IINA) - Around 130,925 Moroccan candidates are standing for municipal elections and 7,588 for regional elections, slated for September 4, Morocco World news reported citing the Moroccan Interior Ministry.
Some 130,925 candidates are vying for 31,503 communal seats, an average of more than 4 candidates for each seat, the Interior ministry pointed out in a statement.
Regarding regional councils, which represent 678 seats, the total number of candidates is estimated at 7,588, spread over 895 candidate lists.
While, regarding the other political parties (19 parties), the candidates validated by these parties represent 23.58 percent of the total number of registered candidates.
The number of candidates remains provisional until receipt of discharges by individual candidates or heads of lists that have filed their candidacies during the last stage of the deadline devoted to submission of candidacies in accordance with the law in force.
The interior minister informed that the election campaign started in the first hours of Saturday, August 22, and will continue until midnight of the day before polling day, Thursday September 3.
